David Coulthard secured pole position but stalled at the start of the formation lap due to an electronic launch control system fault, allowing Michael Schumacher to inherit the lead. Mika Häkkinen ran second early on but dropped behind Barrichello on lap 13 when his car began pulling to the right.
The 2001 Monaco Grand Prix was held on 27 May at the Circuit de Monaco before 100,000 spectators. Schumacher led most of the 78-lap race, briefly ceding the lead to Barrichello during a pit stop on lap 55 before reclaiming first. Barrichello finished second and Eddie Irvine took third for Jaguar.
Schumacher's victory, his fourth of the season, extended his World Drivers' Championship lead over Coulthard from four to twelve points. Ferrari simultaneously stretched their World Constructors' Championship advantage over McLaren to 32 points, with ten races still remaining in the season.
