CAF awarded Tunisia the right to host the 2004 African Cup of Nations on 4 September 2000. Sixteen teams qualified through a qualification process running from September 2002 to July 2003, with Tunisia as host and Cameroon as defending champions receiving automatic berths.
The tournament was held in Tunisia from 24 January to 14 February 2004. Defending champions Cameroon were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Nigeria. Tunisia defeated Morocco 2–1 in the final to claim their first-ever continental title, with Francileudo Santos named top scorer and Nigeria's Jay-Jay Okocha awarded best player.
Tunisia's victory qualified them for the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany as Africa's representative. Nigeria finished third, while Cameroon, the previous two-time defending champions, exited at the quarter-final stage. Santos became the 13th national team to be crowned African champions.
