The 2004 FIA Formula One World Championship scheduled the Brazilian Grand Prix as the eighteenth and final round of the season, marking an unprecedented placement of the race at the end of the calendar rather than earlier in the year as had been customary.
On 24 October 2004, Juan Pablo Montoya won the Brazilian Grand Prix at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace after starting from second on the grid. Kimi Räikkönen finished second and Rubens Barrichello took third place, giving the local driver the only podium finish of his career at his home race.
The result closed out the 2004 Formula One season with Montoya claiming victory, while Barrichello's podium at his home event provided a notable moment for Brazilian fans. The race established a new precedent for the position of the Brazilian GP within the F1 calendar.
