The 2004 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar brought the season's twelfth round to the Hockenheimring circuit in Germany. Michael Schumacher, already dominant through the season with Ferrari, qualified on pole position, setting the stage for a Ferrari-led contest.
On 25 July 2004, Michael Schumacher converted his pole position into a race victory at the Hockenheimring, finishing ahead of Jenson Button in second and Fernando Alonso in third. The race also marked the final Grand Prix for Brazilian driver Cristiano da Matta and the last use of the controversial 'Walrus nose' on the Williams FW26.
Schumacher's victory further extended his commanding lead in the 2004 Drivers' Championship, a title he would go on to secure. Williams abandoned the 'Walrus nose' design after this race, and Cristiano da Matta's Formula One career concluded, ending his involvement in the championship.
