Michael Schumacher had won each of the first five races of the 2004 season, arriving at Monaco as dominant champion. A collision between David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella triggered the first safety car on lap three, compressing the field and setting the stage for a chaotic mid-race period.
Jarno Trulli led from the opening corner, with Fernando Alonso initially close behind. Following Alonso's retirement after a crash with Ralf Schumacher, a second safety car period saw Michael Schumacher briefly lead before colliding with Juan Pablo Montoya and retiring. Trulli held on to win from Jenson Button, with Rubens Barrichello third.
Trulli's win was the only victory of his Formula One career. Schumacher's retirement ended his record-breaking five-race winning streak, though he retained the Drivers' Championship lead. Ferrari remained ahead in the Constructors' Championship by 36 points over Renault, with 12 races remaining in the season.
