Porto qualified for the Super Cup as winners of the 2003–04 UEFA Champions League, having beaten Monaco 3–0 in the final. Valencia qualified as winners of the 2003–04 UEFA Cup, having defeated Marseille in that final, making this a meeting between two European title holders.
The match was played at the Stade Louis II in Monaco on 27 August 2004. Rubén Baraja opened the scoring for Valencia after 30 minutes, and Marco Di Vaio doubled the lead midway through the second half. Ricardo Quaresma pulled one back for Porto in the 78th minute, but Valencia held on to win 2–1 before a crowd of 17,292.
Valencia's victory gave them their second UEFA Super Cup title, having previously won in 1980. Porto, appearing in the Super Cup for the third time, suffered their second defeat in the competition, having won it in 1987 but lost the previous year's edition in 2003.
