FIFA awarded Turkey hosting rights at the March 2011 Executive Meeting in Zürich, after Turkey's bid defeated those from the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan. Turkey initially proposed thirteen stadiums across ten cities, later reducing to seven host cities by February 2012.
The 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup ran from 21 June to 13 July 2013 across seven Turkish cities. Notably, neither Argentina nor Brazil — the competition's two most successful nations — qualified, a first in the tournament's history. France ultimately claimed the title, winning their first U-20 World Cup.
France's victory made them the first nation to have simultaneously won all five FIFA men's 11-a-side titles: the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Confederations Cup, FIFA U-20 World Cup, FIFA U-17 World Cup, and the Olympic football tournament. Brazil's absence was also only the second time they had failed to participate since the competition began in 1977.
