FINA awarded the 2013 World Championships to Dubai in July 2009, but Dubai withdrew as host in May 2010, forcing the governing body to reopen bidding for a replacement venue.
Barcelona was selected on 26 September 2010 and successfully hosted the 15th FINA World Championships from 20 July to 4 August 2013, featuring six aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, high diving, open water, and synchronised swimming.
The championships were held as scheduled in Catalonia, Spain, maintaining the quadrennial cycle of global aquatics competition and reinforcing Barcelona's standing as a capable host of major international sporting events.
