Russian forces and affiliated paramilitary groups were in the process of seizing control of Crimea from Ukraine in early 2014. Tensions between Ukrainian military personnel and Russian-backed forces escalated as Russia moved to annex the peninsula, creating conditions for armed confrontation.
On 18 March 2014, a Ukrainian soldier and a Russian Cossack paramilitary were killed in a skirmish in Crimea. Accounts from Ukrainian and Crimean authorities conflicted, and no independent verification was possible. A 17-year-old Ukrainian was reported detained but the detention was subsequently denied.
The two casualties received a joint funeral attended by both Crimean and Ukrainian authorities. The incident remained under investigation by both sides without a conclusive agreed account. It stands as the opening act of lethal violence in what became a prolonged armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
