CONMEBOL organized the 44th Copa América in Chile, inviting two CONCACAF guest nations — Mexico and Jamaica — to compete alongside the ten South American member associations. Uruguay entered as defending champions, while host Chile sought a breakthrough after never having won the tournament.
The 2015 Copa América was played in Chile from 11 June to 4 July 2015. Twelve national teams competed, with Chile eliminating defending champions Uruguay in the quarter-finals. The final between Chile and Argentina ended goalless after extra time, with Chile winning on penalties to claim their first Copa América title.
Chile's victory earned them a place at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. Jamaica made their Copa América debut, and Argentina were left without the title despite reaching the final. The result marked a historic first continental championship for the Chilean national team.
