Lewis Hamilton arrived at the Hungaroring with a 17-point championship lead over teammate Nico Rosberg, having taken his ninth pole of the season in qualifying. Both Ferrari drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen, lined up behind the Mercedes pair and were poised to challenge at the start.
At the race start, Vettel and Räikkönen swept past the Mercedes cars to run first and second. A safety car period and several errors by both Hamilton and Rosberg disrupted the Mercedes strategy, leaving them to finish sixth and eighth respectively, while the two Red Bull drivers achieved their team's first podium of the season.
Ferrari claimed their first Hungarian Grand Prix victory since 2004, and the race was the first without a Mercedes driver on the podium since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix. Hamilton extended his championship lead over Rosberg to 21 points, while Vettel closed to within 21 points of Rosberg in the standings.
