The Czech Republic was awarded hosting rights by the UEFA Executive Committee on 20 March 2012 in Istanbul. Fifty-two nations competed in a qualification tournament between March 2013 and October 2014 to fill seven spots alongside the hosts, with defending champions Spain eliminated by Serbia in the play-offs.
The final tournament was held in the Czech Republic from 15 to 30 June 2015. In the final at the Eden Arena in Prague, Sweden and Portugal were level after extra time with no goals scored, and Sweden prevailed 4–3 in a penalty shootout to claim their first title in the competition.
Sweden secured their first UEFA Under-21 Championship and their first men's UEFA youth title overall, having previously lost the 1992 final. The four semi-finalists — Denmark, Germany, Portugal, and Sweden — also earned qualification for the men's football tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.
