FINA awarded hosting rights to Kazan, Russia for the 16th edition of its flagship multi-discipline championships. Russia had not previously hosted the event, and the growing global participation base made this edition the largest in the championship's history in terms of nations, athletes, and medals.
The 16th FINA World Championships were held in Kazan, Russia from 24 July to 9 August 2015, featuring six aquatic disciplines across three main venues. The competition introduced mixed-pair synchronized swimming duets and mixed team events for the first time, and also served as a qualifying event for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
China claimed the top position in the medal standings for only the second time ever, ending a run of American dominance unbroken since 2001. Twelve world records were broken during the championships, and the concurrent FINA World Masters Championships set its own records, collectively elevating the profile of aquatic sport globally.
