Two Malaysian militants with links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant planned and executed an attack on a bar in Puchong, Selangor. The attack reflected the growing domestic radicalization of Malaysian nationals inspired by ISIL ideology.
On 28 June 2016, the two attackers threw a grenade into a crowded bar where approximately 20 patrons were watching a UEFA Euro 2016 football match. The explosion injured eight people, including one Chinese national. The perpetrators fled on a motorcycle immediately after the attack.
Both attackers were subsequently arrested by Malaysian authorities. The attack was identified as the first domestic Islamic terror attack in Malaysia carried out by Malaysian nationals with ISIL affiliations, prompting heightened concern about homegrown extremism and national security measures.
