Libya was originally awarded hosting rights but CAF stripped them in August 2014 due to the Second Libyan Civil War, leaving the tournament without a host. Gabon stepped in as the replacement host nation, enabling the tournament to proceed as scheduled in January and February 2017.
The 31st Africa Cup of Nations was held in Gabon in 2017, contested by 16 African national teams. Cameroon advanced through the knockout rounds and met Egypt in the final, winning 2–1 to claim the championship. Burkina Faso secured third place by defeating Ghana 1–0. Hosts Gabon and defending champions Ivory Coast were both eliminated in the group stage.
Cameroon's victory earned them qualification for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. The win gave Cameroon their fifth continental title, reinforcing their status as one of Africa's most successful national football teams. Egypt, seven-time champions, were denied a record-extending eighth title.
