Russia was awarded hosting rights for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on 2 December 2010, which automatically entitled it to host the preceding Confederations Cup as a preparatory tournament. The eight participating teams qualified via confederation championships and the 2014 World Cup title.
The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup was played across four Russian cities from 17 June to 2 July 2017. Eight teams contested a group stage followed by a knockout round. Germany defeated Chile 1–0 in the final to claim their only Confederations Cup title, while the tournament also marked the first use of video assistant referee (VAR) at a FIFA competition.
Following the 2017 tournament, FIFA abolished the Confederations Cup to make way for an expanded FIFA Club World Cup. Germany's victory stood as the sole Confederations Cup win for that nation. The event served as a successful logistical rehearsal for Russia ahead of hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
