In the early hours of 1 January 2017, a lone gunman opened fire at the Reina nightclub in Istanbul's Ortaköy neighbourhood, killing 39 people and wounding 79 others while hundreds celebrated the new year. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
Masharipov was arrested on 17 January 2017 in Istanbul. His trial, along with 51 alleged accomplices, began on 11 December 2017. The attack deepened security concerns in Turkey and underscored the threat posed by ISIS-directed lone-actor assailants in urban civilian settings.
