The 2019–20 UEFA Europa League began as the 49th edition of the competition. Mid-season, the COVID-19 pandemic forced UEFA to suspend the tournament in mid-March 2020, requiring a restructured format with neutral-venue single-leg knockout ties held behind closed doors in Germany from August 10–21.
Sevilla defeated Inter Milan 3–2 in the final at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne on 21 August 2020. The quarter-finals onward were played as single-match ties at neutral venues across Germany, with VAR used throughout the knockout stage in a condensed mini-tournament format necessitated by the pandemic disruption.
Sevilla claimed a record-extending sixth Europa League title, surpassing all other clubs. As winners, they faced UEFA Champions League holders Bayern Munich in the 2020 UEFA Super Cup. Since Sevilla had already qualified for the Champions League via their league position, their Europa League berth passed to Rennes, the third-placed team in Ligue 1.
