Cameroon was stripped of hosting rights on 30 November 2018 due to infrastructure delays, the Boko Haram insurgency, and the Anglophone Crisis. Egypt was subsequently selected as host by the CAF Executive Committee on 8 January 2019, with dates shifted to avoid Ramadan.
The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations was held in Egypt from 21 June to 19 July 2019, marking the first edition with 24 teams and the first played in June/July. Twenty-four African nations competed across the group stage and knockout rounds in Egyptian stadiums.
Algeria defeated Senegal 1–0 in the final to claim their second continental title, ending a 29-year wait since 1990. Defending champions Cameroon were eliminated in the round of 16, while hosts Egypt were also knocked out at that stage by South Africa.
