France was awarded hosting rights in March 2015, marking the country's first time staging the tournament. The United States entered as defending champions following their 2015 title, and the competition featured 24 national teams in the last edition of that expanded format before the field would grow to 32 for 2023.
The 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup was held across nine French cities from 7 June to 7 July 2019, comprising 52 matches. It was the first Women's World Cup to employ the VAR system. The United States defeated the Netherlands 2–0 in the final, claiming their fourth world title under manager Jill Ellis.
The United States became only the second nation after Germany to successfully retain the Women's World Cup title, and the first team to win back-to-back editions under a single manager. Ellis's achievement echoed Vittorio Pozzo's feat with the Italian men's team across 1934 and 1938, a gap of 81 years.
