The EHF expanded the tournament from 16 to 24 national teams for the first time, necessitating a co-hosted format spread across three countries — Austria, Norway, and Sweden — to accommodate the increased number of participating nations.
Held from 9 to 26 January 2020, the tournament saw Spain defeat Croatia 22–20 in the final to claim their second consecutive European title. Co-host Norway secured bronze over Slovenia, while Austria finished 8th and Sweden 7th.
Spain cemented their status as the dominant force in European handball with back-to-back titles. Sander Sagosen's 65-goal tally set a single-tournament scoring record that stood until the 2026 European Championship, when Mathias Gidsel surpassed it with 68 goals.
