The COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the season's start from March to July 2020, led to cancellation of several planned races, and required the first eight rounds to be held behind closed doors. New replacement races were added, resulting in a reduced calendar of 17 Grands Prix instead of the originally planned 22.
The 2020 Formula One World Championship ran from the Austrian Grand Prix in July to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December. Lewis Hamilton won his seventh drivers' title, equalling Michael Schumacher's record, and also broke Schumacher's record of 91 career wins. Mercedes secured their seventh consecutive constructors' championship, surpassing Ferrari's previous record of six consecutive titles.
Mercedes became the only team to win seven consecutive constructors' championships, and Hamilton's seventh title tied the all-time record. Ferrari finished outside the constructors' top five for the first time since 1980, and Sebastian Vettel departed the team after the season to join Aston Martin for 2021.
