Lewis Hamilton led the race until a safety car was deployed to retrieve Kevin Magnussen's broken car. Hamilton entered the pit lane while it was closed and received a penalty, which he served during a subsequent red flag period. Gasly, having pitted before the safety car, found himself in front when racing resumed.
The 2020 Italian Grand Prix was held on 6 September at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Pierre Gasly, starting tenth, capitalised on a well-timed pit stop, Hamilton's penalty, and a red flag restart to take the lead. He defended against Carlos Sainz Jr. in the closing laps to claim victory, with Lance Stroll completing the podium.
Gasly's victory was the first Formula One win for AlphaTauri and the first by a French driver since 1996. The race was the last for Frank and Claire Williams at Williams Racing. The result ended a seven-year streak of race wins exclusively by Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari drivers, and produced the first three-team podium since the 2012 Canadian Grand Prix.
