Myanmar held a multiparty general election on 8 November 2020 to fill seats in both chambers of the Assembly of the Union and State and Regional Hluttaws. The election excluded seats reserved for or appointed by the military, and was conducted across all townships, including conflict zones and self-administered regions.
Voters across 1,171 national, state, and regional constituencies cast ballots for members of the Amyotha Hluttaw and the Pyithu Hluttaw, as well as for Ethnic Affairs Ministers. The election produced results widely regarded as a decisive victory for Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy.
On 1 February 2021, the Tatmadaw declared the results fraudulent and launched a coup, deposing Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. Acting President Myint Swe transferred power to coup leader Min Aung Hlaing under emergency provisions. The military subsequently annulled the election results and repeatedly prolonged the state of emergency, indefinitely delaying new elections.
