The final was originally scheduled for the Allianz Arena in Munich, then reassigned to Saint Petersburg's Krestovsky Stadium. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, UEFA's executive committee convened an emergency meeting the next day and relocated the match to the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, which had previously hosted the 2000 and 2006 finals.
On 28 May 2022, Real Madrid faced Liverpool at the Stade de France in the first UEFA Champions League final with a full crowd since 2019. A goal by Vinícius Júnior in the 59th minute, assisted by Federico Valverde, proved decisive. Kickoff was delayed 36 minutes due to serious crowd control failures at the stadium gates. Real Madrid won 1–0, securing their 14th European Cup title.
Real Madrid's victory earned them entry into the 2022 UEFA Super Cup against Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt and qualification for the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup, both of which they won. The result also secured Real Madrid's place in the inaugural expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup via UEFA's champions pathway, while improving Liverpool's chances of qualifying through the UEFA coefficient route.
