Originally scheduled for August 2021, the championships were postponed by one year due to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics being delayed to 2021. Further complications arose from the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, prompting World Athletics to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes, and from US vaccination and visa requirements that prevented some participants from entering the country.
The 2022 World Athletics Championships, the eighteenth edition, took place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, from July 15–24, marking the first time the United States hosted the event. Over 146,000 tickets were sold, several evening sessions sold out, and three world records were set by Sydney McLaughlin (Women's 400 m Hurdles, 50.68s), Tobi Amusan (Women's 100 m Hurdles, 12.12s), and Armand Duplantis (Men's Pole Vault, 6.21m).
The championships produced a record 29 gold-medal-winning nations, with Peru, Kazakhstan, and Nigeria claiming their first-ever golds. The United States led with 13 gold and 33 total medals, the latter a single-edition record, while the event became the most-watched World Athletics Championships in US television history. Participation was the lowest since 1991 due to the bans and visa restrictions.
