The Ann Street parking garage in Manhattan's Financial District had accumulated building violations dating back to 1957. Despite a 2022 requirement for inspections of New York City parking garages, the structure was not scheduled for inspection until late 2023, leaving longstanding structural deficiencies unaddressed.
On April 18, 2023, the garage's second floor partially collapsed onto the first around 4 p.m. EDT. The FDNY responded, deploying a robotic dog for the first time in a structural collapse. Demolition work was temporarily halted over fears of a secondary collapse, which nonetheless occurred on April 29 when the rear of the garage fell.
The collapse killed one person and injured seven, and prompted the evacuation of neighboring buildings. Local residents were displaced, and the New York City government subsequently mandated examinations of parking garages across the city to prevent similar failures.
