International Archery Federation president James Easton sought to boost public interest in the sport by staging competition in a venue of deep historical resonance. The Panathinaiko Stadium, site of the 1896 Olympic Games and the Ancient Greek Panathenean Games, was chosen to draw crowds through its cultural heritage and natural setting.
One hundred twenty-eight archers from forty-three nations competed in four gold medal events—men's and women's individual and team—at Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens from 15 to 21 August 2004. Ranking rounds were held on 12 August. Despite poor weather during preliminary rounds, four Olympic records were set across the competition.
South Korea dominated the competition, claiming three of the four gold medals contested. Multiple world records fell alongside the Olympic records, and athletes across nations expressed pride at competing in the storied 1896 venue, raising the profile of archery as an Olympic discipline in a historically meaningful setting.
