Cause

As part of the broader 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces launched the Kyiv offensive aimed at encircling the Ukrainian capital. Bucha, located in the western suburbs of Kyiv, was designated one of the most dangerous areas in Kyiv Oblast and became a key target in this encirclement strategy.

Event

From 27 February to 31 March 2022, elements of the Russian Armed Forces and Ukrainian Ground Forces fought for control of Bucha. Ukrainian forces resisted the Russian advance in the western suburbs of Kyiv, including Irpin, Bucha, and Hostomel, until Russian troops ultimately withdrew from the area.

Consequence

Following the Russian withdrawal and Ukraine's recapture of Bucha, evidence of mass atrocities committed by Russian military forces was uncovered. These killings, collectively known as the Bucha massacre, attracted intense international attention and led to widespread condemnation of Russia's conduct during the invasion.
