Following Chiang Kai-shek's successes in the Northern Expedition and the suppression of the Communist-led Guangzhou Uprising by Zhang Fakui in December 1927, factional rivalries within the National Revolutionary Army intensified, setting the stage for armed conflict over control of Guangzhou between competing warlord-aligned commanders.
Li Jishen's forces moved against rivals in the Guangzhou region, engaging in an internal military struggle within the National Revolutionary Army. The conflict pitted Li Jishen against Zhang Fakui and local leader Li Fulin, with fighting taking place in and around Guangzhou in December 1927.
On December 29, 1927, Li Jishen's forces captured Guangzhou, forcing Miao Peinan to retreat to Huizhou. Li Fulin was simultaneously removed from his local leadership position and replaced by Deng Yanhua, cementing Li Jishen's dominance over the Guangzhou area.
