Following Azerbaijan's capture of Jabrayil and full dominance of its district, Azerbaijani forces advanced northward toward Hadrut, a town previously under the control of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh and part of its Hadrut Province. The town held strategic significance due to its surrounding heights and villages.
Heavy artillery engagements began on 7 October 2020. By 9 October, Azerbaijani forces had seized strategically vital villages and heights adjacent to Hadrut. Though both sides initially claimed presence in the town, third-party sources confirmed Azerbaijani control by 14–15 October. Fighting continued in the north and west of the town through 30 October.
By 30 October, third-party sources confirmed Azerbaijani forces had established presence in a valley north of Hadrut, effectively consolidating control over the town and its surrounding area. This outcome represented a significant territorial gain for Azerbaijan in the southern sector of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
