Al-Shabaab militants launched a coordinated assault during their annual Ramadan fighting season, targeting a lightly defended AMISOM outpost in Leego district. The attack formed part of a broader pattern of seasonal offensive operations aimed at undermining the African Union mission and Somali government authority.
On 26 June 2015, al-Shabaab fighters used a vehicle-borne bomb, machine guns, and rocket-propelled grenades to overrun an AMISOM base garrisoned by approximately 100 Burundian soldiers. Around 70 AU troops were killed and the base was seized. Militants reportedly beheaded survivors and recorded footage of the assault.
Somali and AMISOM forces retook the base and town of Leego on 28 June 2015 after al-Shabaab withdrew without resistance, but not before militants beheaded the local Deputy District Commissioner. The attack highlighted the vulnerability of isolated AMISOM outposts and intensified scrutiny of AU force protection measures in Somalia.
