Mahmut-pasha Bushatli launched a broad offensive against Montenegro in 1796. Ottoman forces drawn from multiple towns across the region—including Nikšić, Kolašin, Bihor, Bijelo Polje, Gusinje, Foča, Gacko, Stolac, and Trebinje—were mobilized and began advancing toward the Montenegrin border as part of this coordinated campaign.
In early October 1796, concurrent with the Battle of Krusi, an Ottoman unit assembled from the aforementioned towns advanced into the Morača mountains, attacking Mount Lopatice near Lopate. They were met by Montenegrin tribespeople of Trebjesa, Morača, and Rovci. The Ottoman unit suffered noticeable casualties in the engagement.
The Ottoman flanking force was repulsed with losses, with approximately forty men killed across both sides. The battle demonstrated the ability of local Montenegrin tribal forces to resist coordinated Ottoman advances on multiple fronts simultaneously during the 1796 campaign.
