By May 2022, Lysychansk and its twin city Sievierodonetsk were the last major cities in Luhansk Oblast under Ukrainian control. After a fierce battle for Sievierodonetsk lasting until late June, Ukrainian forces withdrew across the Donets River, leaving Lysychansk exposed to direct Russian assault.
Russian and Luhansk People's Republic forces attacked Lysychansk across the Donets River following the fall of Sievierodonetsk. On 2–3 July 2022, Russia and the LPR declared Lysychansk captured. Ukraine initially denied the loss but on 3 July its general staff confirmed withdrawal from the city to preserve the lives of its defenders.
With Lysychansk taken, Russia declared full control of Luhansk Oblast. The city was the last Ukrainian stronghold in the oblast, and its capture represented one of the most significant Russian territorial gains of the summer 2022 campaign in eastern Ukraine.
