Following the 2014 Libyan parliamentary election, a coalition of Islamist militias rejected the results and the authority of the newly elected House of Representatives. They launched 'Libya Dawn,' a coordinated operation aimed at seizing the airport and key political institutions in Tripoli to contest control of the government.
Beginning on 13 July 2014, Islamist militias aligned with the New General National Congress fought against the Zintani brigades for control of Tripoli International Airport. The battle was part of a broader coup attempt against the House of Representatives and lasted over a month of sustained fighting in and around the airport.
By August 2014, the Islamist coalition captured the airport, which was subsequently destroyed in the fighting. This outcome effectively gave the rival Islamist-backed government a dominant position in Tripoli, deepening Libya's civil war and leaving the country with two competing governments and devastated infrastructure.
