The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, a splinter group from the Karen National Union, defected and provided the Tatmadaw with detailed positional intelligence about Manerplaw's defenses. This internal split within the Karen resistance severely weakened the ability of the Karen National Liberation Army to mount an effective defense of their headquarters.
On 27 January 1995, combined Tatmadaw and DKBA forces launched a final assault on Manerplaw, the strategic village serving as headquarters for both the Karen National Union and the All Burma Students' Democratic Front. KNLA commanders ordered a tactical retreat rather than resist, and the village fell with little fighting.
The loss of Manerplaw deprived the Karen National Union and the All Burma Students' Democratic Front of their main operational base, forcing both organizations to restructure their resistance efforts. The fall represented a major strategic victory for the Myanmar military government and significantly diminished the KNU's capacity to conduct organized armed opposition.
