Iran's 2013 presidential election required candidates to present their platforms publicly. The IRIB chose a new group-debate format, departing from the individual one-on-one style used in prior elections, to allow all eight candidates to respond to common questions and engage with each other's positions.
Three televised debates were held between 31 May and 7 June 2013, featuring all eight presidential candidates. Topics included the economy, foreign policy, and Iran's nuclear negotiations with the P5+1 group. Candidates were selected randomly to answer questions first, after which all others could respond.
The debates drew an audience exceeding 45 million viewers worldwide, giving the Iranian public and international observers broad exposure to candidate positions on critical issues including the nuclear program. The discussions helped shape voter awareness ahead of the June 2013 presidential election.
