During the gothic rock concert Ultratumba 2008 at the Factory nightclub in Quito, a pyrotechnics display by the performing band Vendimia malfunctioned, igniting a fire that rapidly spread throughout the building.
The blaze engulfed the entire Factory nightclub on April 19, 2008, while more than 300 musicians and attendees were present. Nineteen people were killed and at least twenty-four were injured in the fire.
Among the nineteen dead were five of the seven members of gothic rock band Zelestial, which had been scheduled to be honored at the event. The disaster drew attention to safety standards for pyrotechnics use at indoor entertainment venues in Ecuador.
