In 1992, Antonio Peña and several wrestlers split from the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) to found Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA). The new promotion needed a flagship event to establish its identity and showcase major storylines to a large audience just under a year after its formation.
On April 30, 1993, AAA held Triplemanía I at the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City. The card was headlined by a stipulated retirement match between Konnan and Cien Caras, billed as the first of its kind in Lucha Libre, and a Lucha de Apuestas semi-main event in which Perro Aguayo wagered his hair against Máscara Año 2000's mask.
Triplemanía I established a successful annual tradition for AAA, with subsequent Triplemanía events growing into the promotion's biggest show of the year. The event became regarded as AAA's equivalent of WrestleMania, featuring international talent and serving as the culmination of major storylines each year.
