The tournament was originally scheduled for July–August 2021, but was rescheduled to 6–31 July 2022 after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of both UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2020 Summer Olympics. England hosted the event, having previously hosted the 2005 edition when only eight teams competed.
Sixteen national women's teams competed across England in the 13th UEFA Women's Championship. Defending champions Netherlands were eliminated in the quarter-finals by France. England defeated Germany 2–1 after extra time in the final at Wembley Stadium, claiming their first ever UEFA Women's Championship title.
As European champions, England faced 2022 Copa América Femenina winners Brazil in the inaugural 2023 Women's Finalissima, which England won via a penalty shootout. The tournament also marked the use of VAR and goal-line technology in the Women's Euro final for the first time.
