Biography

Abdul Rahman ibn Abdul Aziz al-Sudais was born in 1962 in Al Bukayriyah, a town in Saudi Arabia's Al-Qassim region. He committed himself to Islamic education early on and studied at two of Saudi Arabia's top institutions: Umm al-Qura University in Mecca and King Saud University in Riyadh. His studies gave him a solid understanding of Islamic law, Quranic studies, and religious teachings, forming the basis for a career that would make him a key figure in Islamic worship worldwide.

Al-Sudais became the Chief Imam of the Grand Mosque, Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, in 1984, a role he has held for four decades. In this position, he leads daily prayers at Islam’s holiest site and oversees prayers during the annual Hajj pilgrimage, an event that attracts millions of Muslims from around the world each year. He is also the President of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, expanding his leadership to both Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina. In 2016, he delivered the Hajj sermon at Arafat, addressing a massive gathering of pilgrims.

Outside of his religious duties, al-Sudais is known globally as an accomplished Qari, a Quran reciter, whose voice and style are widely broadcast and recorded. His recitations are some of the most popular among Muslims. In 2005, he was named the Islamic Personality of the Year by the Dubai International Holy Quran Award, highlighting his contributions to Quranic recitation and Islamic knowledge on a global scale.

Al-Sudais has addressed political and humanitarian issues through his platform. He has condemned terrorism and violent extremism, urging Muslims to reject acts of terror. He has also called for peaceful dialogue between different religious groups. Yet, he has criticized Israeli policies regarding Palestinians, denouncing actions by Israeli settlers and the state of Israel and advocating for more international aid to Palestinians. His statements have sometimes sparked controversy, including criticism over remarks seen as unfriendly toward certain non-Muslim groups.

As a professor and Islamic jurist, al-Sudais influences the academic and legal aspects of Islamic thought in Saudi Arabia. His career includes roles in religious leadership, scholarship, and public advocacy, making him one of the most well-known Muslim clerics today. His four decades leading the Grand Mosque have positioned him as a central figure in Islamic religious life during a time of significant change in the Muslim world and global politics.

Before Fame

Abdul Rahman al-Sudais grew up in Al Bukayriyah in the Al-Qassim region, an area of Saudi Arabia known for its strong Islamic educational traditions and religious conservatism. From a young age, he showed a talent for memorizing the Quran and studying religion, which was supported by his community and family. He went on to study formally at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca and King Saud University in Riyadh, where he expanded his knowledge of Islamic law and Quranic studies.

He became an imam at Masjid al-Haram in 1984, when he was in his early twenties—a young age for such a respected and demanding role. This appointment showed that Saudi religious authorities recognized his exceptional skills in recitation and his scholarly background. The 1980s were a time of increased Islamic awareness worldwide, following events like the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the siege of the Grand Mosque in 1979, which intensified Saudi Arabia's focus on the religious qualifications and character of those leading worship at its most sacred sites.
