Biography

Asamoah Gyan (born 22 November 1985) is a retired Ghanaian footballer who played as a striker and was the captain of the Ghana national team. Born in Accra and educated at Accra Academy, Gyan holds the record as Ghana's top international goalscorer with 51 goals in 109 matches. His goal-scoring ability and leadership made him one of Africa's most well-known footballers during his career, which spanned nearly 20 years.

Gyan started his professional career in 2003 with Ghana Premier League club Liberty Professionals, where he scored ten goals in sixteen games. His early success led to a move to Italian Serie A club Udinese, though he spent two seasons on loan at Modena, scoring fifteen goals in 53 league games. When he returned to Udinese, he scored eleven times in 39 league appearances before moving to French Ligue 1 club Rennes in 2008, where he scored fourteen goals in forty-eight league games over two seasons.

In 2010, Gyan made a major move to Premier League club Sunderland, breaking the club's transfer record. He scored ten goals in thirty-four Premier League games during his two seasons with the English club. However, his most successful club period was with Al Ain in the UAE Pro League, initially joining on loan in 2011. He became the league's top goalscorer with 22 goals in 18 matches, leading to a permanent move. While at Al Ain, Gyan set impressive scoring records, netting 31 goals in 22 matches in his second season and 29 goals in 26 matches the following year, finishing as the league's top scorer for three straight seasons.

Internationally, Gyan played for Ghana in three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014) and seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments from 2008 to 2019. With six World Cup goals, he is the top African scorer in World Cup history. His international achievements include helping Ghana achieve third place at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and second place in 2010 and 2015. He also played for his country at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Gyan announced his retirement from professional football on 20 June 2023 and released his memoir called 'LeGYANdry' at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra.

Before Fame

Asamoah Gyan was born and grew up in Accra, the capital of Ghana, where he went to Accra Academy for school. As a child in the 1990s and early 2000s, Gyan rose to prominence when African football was becoming more recognized worldwide, thanks to players like Samuel Kuffour and Tony Yeboah, who opened doors for Ghanaian talent in European leagues.

Gyan's rise began in 2003 when he joined Liberty Professionals in the Ghana Premier League at age 17.
