Biography

Ebrahim Raisolsadati, better known as Ebrahim Raisi, was born on December 14, 1960, in Mashhad, Iran. He was a well-known Islamic jurist, politician, and judge who served as Iran's eighth president from 2021 until he died in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024, in Bakrabad Rural District. A protégé of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and part of the Principlist political faction, Raisi was Iran's second president to die in office after Mohammad-Ali Rajai.

Raisi started his religious studies at 15, attending Qom Hawza, a top Islamic seminary in Iran, and later went to Shahid Motahari University. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, he quickly moved up in Iran's judicial system, taking roles such as Prosecutor of Karaj, Prosecutor of Hamadan, and Deputy Prosecutor and Prosecutor of Tehran. His involvement in the 1988 executions of political prisoners with the Tehran 'death commission' led to international condemnation and earned him the nickname 'Butcher of Tehran.' United Nations special rapporteurs and human rights groups accused him of crimes against humanity for his part in these executions.

Throughout his career, Raisi held many high-ranking judicial and administrative roles. He was Deputy Chief Justice from 2004 to 2014, Attorney General from 2014 to 2016, and Chief Justice from 2019 to 2021. From 2016 to 2019, he was Custodian and Chairman of Astan Quds Razavi, a powerful religious foundation managing the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad. He was also elected to the Assembly of Experts from South Khorasan Province in 2006.

Raisi's political ambitions led to two presidential campaigns. In 2017, as the candidate for the conservative Popular Front of Islamic Revolution Forces, he lost to moderate incumbent Hassan Rouhani, receiving 38% of the vote to Rouhani's 57%. However, in 2021, he won the presidency with 63% of the votes. His presidency took a hardline stance on domestic and international issues, including stalled talks with the United States over the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal and his administration's tough response to widespread protests that started in late 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. He was married to Jamileh Alamolhoda, daughter of Ahmad Alamolhoda, the Grand Imam of Imam Reza shrine and Friday prayer leader of Mashhad.

Before Fame

Raisi grew up during a key time in Iranian history, seeing the last years of the Pahlavi monarchy and the growing revolutionary spirit that would change the country. He started his clerical studies at 15, joining the young seminary students who supported the Islamic Revolution's ideals and quickly aligned with Ayatollah Khomeini's new theocratic system.

The 1979 Iranian Revolution created unique opportunities for young clerics like Raisi to take on leadership roles in the newly formed Islamic Republic. As the new government worked to replace the monarchy's institutions with Islamic governance, educated religious figures were needed for the growing judicial system. Raisi's early work in the revolutionary courts and his fast rise in the prosecutorial ranks showed both his legal skills and his strong loyalty to the revolutionary cause.
