Biography

Abe no Seimei was a Japanese onmyōji at the imperial court during the middle Heian period, from 921 to 1005. Born in what is now Abeno-ku, Osaka, he became famous for his work in Onmyōdō, a system that blends Chinese cosmology, astronomy, and spiritual practices. As a court official, Seimei advised emperors and government officials on spiritual and cosmological matters, helping them address various challenges.

At court, Seimei handled many tasks related to spiritual and astronomical guidance. He prayed for the well-being of emperors and the stability of the government, and he provided advice on political decisions and personal concerns of the imperial family. His skill in astrology helped him predict celestial events and interpret their meaning for earthly matters, making him a key advisor during uncertain or challenging times.

Seimei lived to be 84, which was unusually long for his time, and he did so without major illnesses. This and his success in mystical practices fueled beliefs in his supernatural abilities. Tales of his powers spread beyond the court, turning him into a legendary figure in Japanese folklore that lasted long after his death.

Among his writings, the Senji Ryakketsu is an important contribution to Onmyōdō literature. His influence continued well after his lifetime, with the Seimei Shrine in Kyoto honoring his memory. The Abeno train station and district in Osaka also carry his name, showing the lasting link between his birthplace and his legendary status in Japanese culture.
