Biography
Anousheh Ansari was born on September 12, 1966, in Mashhad, Iran. She grew up in a middle-class family and moved to the United States as a teenager to continue her education in engineering and technology. Ansari got her Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from George Mason University and later a Master's degree from George Washington University. Her engineering studies laid the groundwork for her future in the telecommunications and technology industries.
In the 1990s, Ansari co-founded Telecom Technologies, Inc. with her husband and brother-in-law, acting as the company's CEO. The telecommunications company focused on software and services for telephone switches and network equipment. The business grew quickly during the telecommunications boom of the late 1990s. In 2001, Sonus Networks acquired Telecom Technologies for about $750 million, marking Ansari as a successful tech entrepreneur and bringing her considerable wealth.
After selling Telecom Technologies, Ansari remained in the tech field by co-founding Prodea Systems, a company focused on Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. She is the chairwoman of Prodea Systems and also pursues various philanthropic and space-related interests. The Ansari family gained attention for supporting commercial space exploration by sponsoring the Ansari X Prize, a $10 million competition to boost private spaceflight development. SpaceShipOne won the prize in 2004.
On September 18, 2006, Ansari became the first Iranian person to go to space and the first woman to explore space privately. She flew on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station as a backup crew member for a planned mission, taking the place of Japanese businessman Daisuke Enomoto, who was medically disqualified. During her eight-day mission, she conducted scientific experiments and worked as a civilian astronaut. Her trip made her the fourth self-funded space tourist ever and was a big moment for both Iranian representation and women's roles in commercial spaceflight.
Ansari has received many awards for her work in technology, entrepreneurship, and space exploration, such as the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Great Immigrants Award in 2010, and the Horatio Alger Award. She co-authored a memoir called 'My Dream of Stars' with Homer Hickam, published in 2010. Recently, Ansari became the CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation, an organization that sets up public competitions to encourage technological progress for the good of humanity.
Before Fame
Growing up in Iran during the 1970s and early 1980s, Ansari lived through the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War before her family decided to move to the United States. As a teenager adjusting to American culture and schools, she showed exceptional talent in math and science. Her interest in technology and engineering started to grow during the early days of personal computing and the expansion of telecommunications in the 1980s.
The telecommunications industry was rapidly changing during Ansari's college years, with deregulation opening up new opportunities for innovative companies. After completing her engineering education, she joined the workforce just as the internet and telecommunications were booming. Her timing was fortunate, as the increasing demand for telecommunications infrastructure and software solutions created the perfect setting for the technology company she would later start.
