Biography

Abhisit Vejjajiva is a Thai politician and economist who was Thailand's 27th Prime Minister from 2008 to 2011. He was born on August 3, 1964, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, to a Thai Chinese father, Professor Atthasit, and a Siamese mother, Sodsai. He has dual Thai-British citizenship. His early exposure to international environments helped shape his political and philosophical views. Abhisit studied at Eton College and later earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Oxford, attending St John's College and Nuffield College.

After his time at Oxford, Abhisit returned to Thailand and began an academic career in economics. He taught at Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy and Thammasat University before moving into politics. He entered the Thai House of Representatives at the young age of 27, showing how quickly he was making his mark in Thai politics. Between 1997 and 2001, during Chuan Leekpai's government, he was minister to the Office of the Prime Minister, gaining valuable experience.

Abhisit's role in the Democrat Party grew over time. Although he lost the party leadership election in 2003, he became party chairman in 2005 after the Democrats suffered a general election loss. He became Prime Minister after Somchai Wongsawat was removed from office on December 17, 2008. At 44, he was the youngest prime minister in over 60 years, taking office amid the global Great Recession and rising domestic political tensions.

As Prime Minister, Abhisit launched his "People's Agenda," aiming to improve conditions for Thailand's rural and working-class communities. He oversaw two major economic stimulus packages, including a US$40 billion three-year infrastructure program to address the global economic crisis. His time in office faced significant political challenges and social unrest. After leaving office in 2011, he served as opposition leader until the Democrat Party resigned from the House on December 8, 2013. He resigned as party leader after the 2019 election but took up the role again in October 2025.

Before Fame

Growing up in a family with academic parents who moved around internationally, Abhisit had an early blend of Thai and Western education. Born in England, his father's academic work gave him a unique cross-cultural perspective that shaped his political views later on. The importance placed on education in his family meant he attended Eton College, a top British school.

Abhisit's rise began in the 1980s and 1990s during Thailand's push for economic modernization, when the country needed leaders who combined traditional Thai values with an understanding of international economic trends. With an economics degree from Oxford, he was well-suited for this role, balancing knowledge of global markets with local issues. His early teaching roles in military and civilian settings built his reputation as both an intellectual and someone connected to Thailand's security network.
