Biography
Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known simply as Adele, was born on May 5, 1988, in Tottenham, London, England. Raised by her single mother, Penny Adkins, she developed a love for music early on and started singing at the age of four. Her strong, soulful voice was influenced by artists like Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Amy Winehouse. After graduating from the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology in 2006, she posted her songs on MySpace, which caught the attention of XL Recordings.
Her first album, "19," came out in 2008 when she was 19. It quickly showed her to be a major talent in music, featuring hits like "Chasing Pavements" and "Hometown Glory," and received both critical praise and commercial success. But it was her second album, "21" in 2011, that made her an international star. Inspired by a tough breakup, the album featured top singles like "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," and "Set Fire to the Rain." "21" became one of the best-selling albums ever, staying at the top of the Billboard 200 for 24 weeks.
Adele's third album, "25," released in 2015, followed her pattern of naming albums after her age when she started working on them. The hit single "Hello" broke many records, including the most downloads in a week. The album sold over 3.38 million copies in its first week in the US alone, making it the fastest-selling album in US history at that time. Her emotional songs and powerful voice connected with listeners everywhere, making her one of the most successful artists of the 21st century.
Throughout her career, Adele has been careful about how often she appears in public and tours, often taking long breaks between albums to focus on her personal life and her son, Angelo. Her genuine nature, relatable songs about love and heartbreak, and unwillingness to fit into the typical pop mold have made her popular with fans of all ages. She has sold over 120 million records worldwide and has won numerous awards, including 15 Grammy Awards, 12 Brit Awards, and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Before Fame
Adele was born in North London to teenage parents and mostly raised by her mother after her father left when she was two. Her mom worked various jobs to support them and they moved around often, living in places like Tottenham, Brighton, and South London. Despite having financial difficulties, her mom was supportive of her musical interests and got her into the well-known BRIT School in Croydon.
While at the BRIT School, Adele studied with future stars like Leona Lewis and Jessie J. She initially had a hard time with confidence but found her voice in songwriting and performance classes. In her final year, a friend uploaded her demo songs to MySpace, where music executives discovered them. This online exposure led to her signing with XL Recordings just four months after graduating, kicking off her rapid rise to fame.
