Biography

Agnieszka Roma Radwańska, born on March 6, 1989, in Kraków, Poland, is a former professional tennis player and now a coach. She reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 2 with the Women's Tennis Association in July 2012. Over more than a decade at the top level, she won 20 WTA Tour singles titles and two doubles titles, becoming the most successful Polish tennis player of her time in the Open Era. She is married to Dawid Celt. In December 2024, she began coaching Polish player Magda Linette.

Radwańska turned professional and quickly showed exceptional skill and versatility on the court. She was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2006 and won her first WTA Tour singles title at the 2007 Nordic Light Open, becoming the first Pole to win a WTA Tour singles title in the Open Era. Her style of play, known for variety, precision, and tactical intelligence, set her apart from many players who mainly relied on power.

The highlight of Radwańska's career came in the early and mid-2010s. In 2012, she became the first Polish player in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam singles final, making it to the Wimbledon Championships final, where she lost to Serena Williams. That year, she also reached her career-high of No. 2 in the world rankings. In 2015, she won her most prestigious title, the WTA Finals in Singapore, and helped the Polish team win the Hopman Cup for the first time. She finished with a top-10 year-end ranking eight times in her career.

Beyond her results on the court, Radwańska was very popular with fans worldwide. She was voted the WTA Fan Favorite Singles Player for six consecutive years from 2011 to 2016, a record for any player in that award's history. She also won the Fan Favorite Shot of the Year for five consecutive years from 2013 to 2017. In recognition of her achievements and her representation of Poland, she received the Gold Cross of Merit from Polish President Bronisław Komorowski in 2013, as well as the Bene Merito award and was named a Commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Radwańska retired from professional tennis in November 2018 at the age of 29.

Before Fame

Agnieszka Radwańska grew up in Kraków, Poland, where she and her younger sister Urszula got into tennis early on, thanks to their father, Robert Radwański, who also coached Agnieszka for much of her career. At that time, Poland didn't have a strong tradition in elite professional tennis, and the country's sports facilities were not as developed as in places with well-established programs. Despite these challenges, Radwańska quickly advanced through junior competitions, and her technical skills became the hallmark of her professional style.

She played on the ITF junior circuit before moving into professional tennis, gaining attention for her impressive skills on the court. Her big breakthrough came in 2006 when the WTA named her Newcomer of the Year, marking her as a serious competitor on the tour. She steadily improved, known for her consistency and mature game, which set her up for a long career at the top levels of tennis.
