Biography
Ahmet Davutoğlu was born on February 26, 1959, in Taşkent, Turkey. He went to Istanbul High School and later studied at Boğaziçi University, focusing on political science and international relations. He built a successful academic career, becoming a noted scholar in international relations theory and foreign policy analysis. He wrote many pieces on geopolitics and strategic thinking, becoming a leading voice in Turkey on foreign affairs.
Davutoğlu moved from academia to politics in 2003 when he became chief advisor to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In this role, he was key in shaping Turkey's foreign policy and developed the 'Strategic Depth' doctrine, which encouraged Turkey to use its historical and geographical strengths to become a regional power. This approach highlighted Turkey's ability to connect with regions such as Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Balkans.
In 2009, Davutoğlu became Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 2014. He pursued a proactive foreign policy, aiming to improve relations with neighboring countries and increase Turkey's diplomatic influence. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Konya in 2011 and was reelected in both the 2015 general elections. When Erdoğan became President in 2014, Davutoğlu was elected leader of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and became the 26th Prime Minister of Turkey.
As Prime Minister, Davutoğlu faced challenges such as the loss of AKP's parliamentary majority in the June 2015 elections and the formation of Turkey's first interim election government. His time in leadership included failed coalition talks with opposition parties and organizing snap elections in November 2015, which brought back AKP's majority. However, disagreements with President Erdoğan over issues like parliamentary candidate lists led to his resignation on May 22, 2016. He is married to Sare Davutoğlu and remains active in Turkish politics and academic discussions.
Before Fame
Davutoğlu's early life in Taşkent exposed him to Turkey's many cultural influences, and his education at the prestigious Istanbul High School connected him with the country's top intellectuals. He studied at Boğaziçi University in the late 1970s and early 1980s, a time of political upheaval in Turkey that included military interventions and social change.
His rise to prominence came from his scholarly work in international relations, where he developed new theories on Turkey's geopolitical role.
