Biography

Alfredo Stroessner Matiauda (1912–2006) was a Paraguayan military officer and politician who became the 42nd president of Paraguay, ruling from 1954 to 1989 in one of the longest military dictatorships in modern Latin American history. Born in Encarnación, Paraguay, Stroessner rose through military ranks and took power in a coup on May 4, 1954, backed by the Colorado Party and the Paraguayan Army. His 35-year reign, known as El Stronato, was marked by authoritarian rule, political repression, and the suspension of rights.

Stroessner got his military training at the Mar. Francisco Solano López Military Academy and later at the Escola de Aperfeiçoamento de Oficiais in Brazil, which influenced his military and political path. After leading the 1954 coup, he first acted as the leader before being elected president without opposition in August 1954, as all opposition had been banned since 1947. He quickly took control by suspending rights and using the army and police for state control and surveillance.

During his presidency, Stroessner stayed in power through electoral fraud from 1958 to 1988, making constitutional changes to extend his rule. The 1967 Constitution allowed re-election, and changes in 1977 enabled indefinite rule. His regime involved violent repression, targeting opposition figures, though opposition parties were nominally allowed in 1962. He relied on clientelism and military support to keep control.

Stroessner's rule ended on February 2-3, 1989, when his close ally General Andrés Rodríguez Pedotti ousted him in a coup. He was exiled to Brazil on February 5, 1989, where he lived until his death on August 16, 2006, in Brasília. Throughout his life, he received several international honors, including the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III. His marriage to Ligia Stroessner linked him to influential political circles in Paraguay.

Before Fame

Alfredo Stroessner was born into a middle-class family in Encarnación, Paraguay, during a time of significant political instability in the country. His early military education at the Mar. Francisco Solano López Military Academy laid the groundwork for his eventual rise in Paraguay's military, while his additional training at Brazil's Escola de Aperfeiçoamento de Oficiais helped him build international military connections and gain strategic knowledge.

Stroessner's rise to power began during the turbulent political times of the 1940s and early 1950s, when Paraguay experienced frequent coups and political turmoil. By aligning himself with the Colorado Party and holding a position within the military, he was strategically positioned to take advantage of the political instability, which ultimately led to his successful coup in 1954, transforming him from a military officer into Paraguay's longest-serving dictator.
